*SOLD OUT* Intro to Wild Mushrooms

Within the ecological community, there is a growing understanding of the utterly vital roles fungi play in healthy ecosystems. And yet within our society at large, there remains more fear than knowledge about these amazing organisms. The goal of this course is to give wild mushroom novices a safe and immersive introduction to fungi that can serve as a solid base for future exploration, whether that be learning to forage or grow mushrooms, or incorporating fungal knowledge into other practices like gardening, herbalism, or art.

The half-day class will be broken into three sections, with a brief overview leading into a foray through the forest to find and collect mushrooms, followed by hands-on mushroom identification including learning to take a spore print. We'll close our session with a B.Y.O. picnic lunch together on beautiful White Feather Farm.

This class is aimed at adult-level learners but is open to older kids accompanied by an adult. There are no prerequisites for knowledge, but participants should come with sensible shoes for off-trail exploration, a water bottle, and a collection bag (a canvas tote or even a paper grocery bag is fine), and lunch to picnic with if desired. Please address specific questions about accessibility to Chris at chicorynaturalist@gmail.com.

Birds and Botany

Birds_and_Botany.png

Join garden geek Kris and bird nerd Nathaniel for a walk of the farm as we take a look at the last wildflowers of the season while keeping our eyes and ears open for birds during this season of fall migration. We will walk along the field edges and through the forest and wetlands that make up the majority of the farm's property. Botanical highlights include Goldenrods, Asters, and more; birds have wings and are a bit harder to predict, but we can hope for colorful local characters such as flickers and kingfishers, as well as world travelers such as warblers and kinglets. Bring binoculars if you have them.

We encourage folks to wear waterproof shoes this time of year!

Suggested Donation is a sliding scale of $10-$20.

In 2016, he lost the election for a Missouri senate seat by a slim margin before deciding to campaign for mayor of Kansas City as a potential stepping stone for a presidential run. SoundWaves at White Feather Farm: Miramar

SoundWaves at White Feather Farm in Saugerties, NY An eclectic series of musical discovery

Soundwaves at White Feather Farm is a series of extraordinary music from around the world - and around the corner. The series aims to promote artistic and cultural expressions that transcend traditional boundaries and strengthen and build community in the Hudson Valley through genre-defying music for curious listeners.

Miramar draws its inspiration from the golden age of romantic music, primarily that of the Latin American genre known as the bolero which was made popular by Mexican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican combos of the 1950s. Also referred to as "trio music," the term bolero became synonymous with various slow to medium grooved Latin American dance rhythms. As the popularity of the bolero thrived, it also expanded and fused with other musical styles to create sub-genres of bolero-rock, jazz, and disco. Miramar simply further expands the tradition through their own interpretations and exploration through new compositions with hopes to enrich a new audience that may be previously unaware of the genre.

Sxip Shirey tests the edge of music using his vast imagination to create playful and mischievous songs using familiar objects, mutant instruments, and reconfigured sounds. He has acoustic beauty. “Sxip Shirey's imagination for sounds, sound combinations, and textural color -- ranging from experimental and far-out electronically enriched nuggets to slow and heavy gypsy folk songs to eccentric Wurlitzer organ pieces to the odd country folk song -- makes him one of the most curious combinations of composer-sound designer-performer meets storyteller-curator.” — CD Baby

Soundwaves at White Feather Farm is a series of extraordinary music from around the world - and around the corner. The series aims to promote artistic and cultural expressions that transcend traditional boundaries and strengthen and build community in the Hudson Valley through genre-defying music for curious listeners.

Wrembel may be the foremost interpreter of Django Reinhardt’s music in North America. Whether sticking to the French master’s arrangements, or taking the music into new territory, Wrembel has always treated Django like a classical composer rather the cliché paragon of swing and speed the master guitarist has often been portrayed as. In addition to Wrembel’s work as a film composer and performer (he wrote the theme song to Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and scored Allen’s last movie) Wrembel has delved into the study of Django’s “Improvisations” - the solo pieces that Django recorded throughout his life and were in fact precisely scripted and more akin to classical preludes than jazz improv. Wrembel painstakingly transcribed and memorized the entire cycle, highlighting the influence of Ravel and Debussy on the music, as well as the original compositional approach. Wrembel released the album “Django L’impressionniste” back in October 2019 - a stunning work, which he premiered at the prestigious Lyon Opera house, in France.

SoundWaves at White Feather Farm: Mandingo Ambassadors: 70s African Funk

SoundWaves at White Feather Farm in Saugerties, NY. An eclectic series of musical discovery

Soundwaves at White Feather Farm is a series of extraordinary music from around the world - and around the corner. The series aims to promote artistic and cultural expressions that transcend traditional boundaries and strengthen and build community in the Hudson Valley through genre-defying music for curious listeners.

The Mandingo Ambassadors was founded by griot-guitarist Mamady Kouyaté in 2005. A veteran of the great orchestras of the golden age of Guinean dance bands in West Africa, Mamady is a living library of musical science inherited from his ancestors and from a half century of experience as an arranger, band leader, accompanist and soloist. Representing a musical tradition that stretches back hundreds of years, Mamady plays with a melodic virtuosity that pulls in listeners.

Dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system. -- NY TIMES

Intro to Foraging Medicinal and Edible Plants

Curious about native plants, foraging, and utilizing them in everyday life? Join our very own plant lover, Bryana Shevlin for a foraging walk Wednesday, August 18th! Bryana will lead the group through an exploration of the White Feather Farm property, focusing on identifying edible and/or medicinal plants along the way. The plant walk will include plant identification, potential uses, sustainable harvesting techniques, how to spot differences between invasive and native species, and how that applies to sustainable harvesting practices. Bryana’s approach to plant identification and education is based in an intentional practice of forming relationships with the plants. Native plants that might be encountered and discussed:Blue Vervain — a medicinal plant that Bryana likes to harvest and tincture to use as a nerve-calming sleep aid. Cattails — a food source and material to weave/build with.  Grapevines — you guessed it, edible grapes and leaves!  This walk is aimed at adult-level learners but open to older children accompanied by an adult. Please come prepared with sensible shoes for all-terrain walking, a water bottle, insect/tick repellent, and a notebook and pen.Suggested Donation $15 at the door.

Introduction to Wild Mushrooms

Introduction to Wild Mushrooms

Within the ecological community, there is a growing understanding of the utterly vital roles fungi play in healthy ecosystems. And yet within our society at large, there remains more fear than knowledge about these amazing organisms. The goal of this course is to give wild mushroom novices a safe and immersive introduction to fungi that can serve as a solid base for future exploration, whether that be learning to forage or grow mushrooms, or incorporating fungal knowledge into other practices like gardening, herbalism, or art.

The half-day class will be broken into three sections, with a brief lecture leading into a foray through the forest to find and collect mushrooms, followed by hands-on mushroom identification.

Saturday, July 31st

9am-2pm

$25 per person
